Task 2: Research into existing products. The Dark Knight Rises

Analyse how the film’s opening establishes genre conventions and reaches target audiences through technical codes, narrative and characterisation.
The Dark Knight Rises

The Dark Knight Rises is a super hero film that was released in 2012 and was directed by Christopher Nolan. The film has the super hero Batman in and the film was the third of its trilogy produced by Christopher Nolan. The film includes stars such as Christian Bale, Morgan Freeman, Tom Hardy, Anne Hathaway, Michael Caine and Gary Oldman. The film has grossed over £1 billion within the box office and is still growing up to this date.

The movie starts off with a very dramatic start. 3 people who seem to be captured by the CIA who are looking for a person named ‘Bane’. Whilst a man is being threatened one of the hostages speaks. The Agent takes the bag of his head to reveal a bald man with a mask. This is Bane. A Overhead plane suddenly flies over and attacks the plane which bane is within. Bane starts to fight the CIA in hand to hand combat and is rescued by the overhead place. This Action packed intro sets the mood for the film perfectly and shows how the film will be of action nature.

The props used for the film also set its action genre. The Aeroplanes and Guns make it obvious that some sort of fight is going to happen and the props show that the scene is fit for an action movie. In comparison to the outfits they are very similar. Banes mask looks very sinister and deadly which makes his character very fit for an action movie, Even an horror movie.

The Fights between Bane & Batman ultimately show the movies action nature as there is more than one fight. It is packed with scenes of Batman & Bane fighting and Bane appears to be more physically stronger. The fight scenes between the two always have quick changing camera angles which makes the scenes flow quicker and with a much faster-pace. The speeds in which the angles change create the action-packed feel to the movie.

In Conclusion The Dark Knight Rises is seen widely as an action genre film and its easy to see why, The costumes and army atmosphere give the movie an action look straight away and the fight scenes in joint with the fast paced camera angles make the movie appear very fast and action packed. This is how the audience can see the film as an Action movie.

Task 2: Research into existing products. SE7EN

Analyse how the film’s opening establishes genre conventions and reaches target audiences through technical codes, narrative and characterization.

Se7en.

Seven is an American thriller film released in 1995. It was directed by David Fincher and written by Andrew Walker.  It went under production with a budget of $30 million and grossed $327,311,859 at the Box office.

The Film Se7en is about a rookie and professional investigators calls David Mills & William Somerset. They discover a string of deaths which is linked to the 7 sins, Gluttony, Greed, Sloth, Envy, Wrath, Pride and Lust. They are forced to address the murders and track down the murderer.

I will be seeing how the Movie shows its genre of thriller using the analysis of M.E.S, Camera Angles, and Sound and Editing.

Throughout the opening of the film the lighting is always musky and dark. I think this makes the film more effective being a Thriller genre. The lighting makes the atmosphere of the film to be Realistic and ‘Formal’. The realistic nature of the film makes it appear more believable which Thrillers sometimes can be. In addition to the realistic lighting the costumes are not completely out of proportion. The suits and clothes which each individual character wears seem to be realistic within se7en and the atmosphere of realism allows the audience to engage with the Events and characters.
Overall I think the Realistic atmosphere of Se7en is a way in which the audience can decipher how Se7en is classed as a sensible thriller.

A close up shot of names being crossed out is a clever shot in creating an atmosphere of mystery and tension which is an iconic thriller effect. The way the names are being crossed out make the atmosphere to appear quite sinister and eerie as you quickly think people are being murdered as they are being crossed out.

In Conclusion the clever shots of the names being crossed out, in with the realism of the movie separate it from horror genre as its realistic and can be seen as a today situation. This is what makes it appear as a thriller.
